The weather is a fairly common topic in chats between folks around the Bay of Fundy. Neighbors love to chat about the weather, possibly because the Bay of Fundy’s coastal climate is notoriously hard to predict. Visitors should be aware the Bay of Fundy is a 4 season destination.

Winter (December-March)

During the winter months temperatures normally range all the way from -10 C to 4 C (14 F to 40 F). Temperatures during the day are generally warmer and temperatures begin to warm up close to the end of the season. Snow is likely to occur throughout the season. As a result, many seasonal tourism attractions and services are shut down for the winter months. Despite this, the winter remains a great time to go to the Bay of Fundy. Many events, urban entertainment, accommodations, spas, shopping, museums, and winter activities (snow shoeing, snowboarding, skiing, and snowmobiling, etc) remain available during the winter season.

Spring (March -June)

In the spring months temperatures can range all the way from -5 C to 22 C (23 F to 72 F). Temperatures during the day are sometimes warmer. Temperatures continuously warm up as the season progresses and by the end of April the winter’s snow is typically gon. Around the start of May the plants and trees start to bloom. The majority or tourism related attractions and services will have opened by the 1st of May.

Summer (June-September)

Throughout the season temperatures can go from 10 C to 25 C (50 F to 77 F). Temperatures during the day are generally warmer. Nearing the end of the season temperatures begin to chill. All tourism related attractions and services are open and in full swing in the summer (excepting the ski hills naturally).

Fall (September-December)

During the fall months temperatures will range all the way from approximately 2 C to 20 C (36 F to 68 F). Temperatures during the day are usually warmer. Trees start to turn to yellow and red in early October and they will have lost their leaves by the end of October. Temperatures cool down as the season progresses. Possibilities of snow in this season get more likely in late November and in December. The majority of tourism related attractions and services remain open till the middle or end of October.

Bituminous sands, generally known as oil sands or tar sands, are a type of unconventional petroleum deposit. The sands contain naturally occurring mixtures of sand, clay, water, and a dense and extremely viscous form of petroleum technically referred to as bitumen (or colloquially “tar” due to its similar appearance, odour, and colour). Oil sands are found in large amounts in many countries throughout the world, but are found in extremely large quantities in Canada and Venezuela.

The largest oil sands project is in Alberta. The oil sands are buried below the Boreal Forest of northern Alberta on indigenous land is the world’s second largest oil reserve: the tar sands. Oil from the tar sands is one of the world’s most carbon-intensive fuels, and rapid development of the tar sands could tip the scales towards dangerous and uncontrollable climate change.

As the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in the country, the tar sands are the main reason Canada continues to block meaningful global climate regulations. The Canadian government ignores the warnings of the scientific community by aiming for abysmal targets that will leave us at nearly double the science-based target that we need to meet to keep the increase in global temperature below 2 C and avoid catastrophic climate change.

The tar sands cover an area of land the size of England, which has been divided up and leased to the world’s biggest oil companies. These multinational organizations use mammoth machines to carve into the earth and excavate the sticky sand from the open-pit mines. The surface area that must be destroyed to get at the bitumen is called “overburden” by industry, but we call it the Boreal Forest.

The Boreal Forest is a highly complex ecosystem that supports a vast array of plants and wildlife including grizzly bears, wolverine, woodland caribou and over a billion birds. It represents more than 25% of all ancient forests left on the planet and is a source of clean water for millions of Canadians. The Boreal Forest is home to hundreds of First Nations communities that depend on the forest for their sustenance, jobs and traditional activities. Many of the areas under development in the Boreal Forest are subject to land claims and disputes.

The proposed pipeline for the Oil Sands project to the U.S. has raised some interesting questions about ethics and the power of the big oil companies. If President Obama were to approve the permit for the pipeline, then he would be acting to promote climate chaos, and this decision could not be blamed on the dispute over the nation’s projected debt in 2021, Republicans or the Tea Party. It would be President Obama, standing alone, breaking a campaign promise to act to protect the climate from chaos induced by human action. Environmentalists say that the president’s failure to take any substantive steps to protect the environment and stop the climate crisis has left his base disheartened and desperate. While the president can blame Congress for the failure to pass a climate bill, the decision on whether to grant a permit for the Keystone XL pipeline is his and his alone.

What’s green? Green kitchen countertops feature remade or maybe ecological content, low-toxicity binders, eco-friendly developing methods, or a combination. Local production is good, too, if you’re able to arrange it, since transporting countertops is a big fuel-guzzler.

Although the most important point is usually to select something durable-if you won’t ever have to purchase new countertops all over again, that’s as green as it gets.

The amount of imaginative applications pertaining to reprocessed materials certainly not ceases to surprise me. Countertops are a wonderful example of exactly how innovative ‘green’ materials might be both beautiful and functional alternatives to traditional products.

One of the remodeling projects we’re currently working on at Klondike Contracting has incorporated Alkemi countertops into the design and this made me think on what my personal favorite ‘green’ countertop materials are?

Alkemi is certainly within the top three. This type of surfaces is created by embedding fine-flaked aluminum milling scrap in resin. Once establish, the resulting surface reflects light attractively, can be used functionally to be a kitchen counter top and greatest of all, is manufactured out of recycled post-industrial refuse material.

My second preferred reused countertop material is Enviroglas. This particular product is created by 100% consumer and commercial post-use glass being embedded into an epoxy resin binder. The finished surface often appears remarkable. The perfect attributes of this product: you are able to change the colors of the glass as well as resin, the product has a 40+ year life span and the materials used to make countertop are ecologically sound.

I have saved my most favorite countertop material for last. My love for this product is two-fold, it is absolutely stunning and it is made from natural material and pre and post consumer scraps. Glass Tiles are made primarily from silica sand, a readily available natural resource, and recycled content. These tiles can be used in countless applications and because each batch of tiles is handcrafted you feel like you are looking at a piece of art. Best of all, it is manufactured out of reprocessed post-industrial recycle material.

Is it the best time to reroof? Tearing off a roof produces a great deal of waste. This material, on the other hand, doesn’t need to be meant for the landfill.
