Tom Thomsen, the owner of Southern Bamboo Inc. In this article Tom will bring to surface several species of bamboo that grow here in America. Southern Bamboo was founded in 2011 and offers timber bamboo poles as well as beautiful ornamental poles for indoor or outdoor display. Quality bamboo pole that are available for resale are treated with a UV coating to ensure a long lasting beauty and customer satisfaction. For more utilitarian purposes consumers should look for Henon, Moso and Tonkin, the strongest species of bamboo usually utilized when one is building tiki bars, fencing, gazebos and flooring.
At Southern Bamboo, all of our bamboo is 100% home-grown in the Southern United States. We’ve combined several bamboo groves to create a network of bamboo growers that produce a wide variety of decorative and timber bamboo poles. All of our bamboo poles are hand-selected and harvested. Once cut into desired lengths, the bamboo poles are then processed using our proprietary processing system. Most timber species of bamboo are kiln-dried to preserve their durability, while decorative bamboo poles are treated and coated with a UV-protectant, which ensures that their beautiful, natural color will endure.
Depending on indoor/outdoor pole placement and the amount of daily direct sunlight poles are exposed to, some people may experience slight color fading over time. But when treated properly bamboo will maintain color and vibrancy for extended periods of time. Certain types of bamboo poles do better than other based on the application you apply to the bamboo, let’s look at a couple types of bamboo species and the setting in which one can apply them.
Moso Bamboo is most widely used in the manufacturing of lumber products and bamboo flooring. Believe it or not Moso has a tensile strength greater than corded steel, and can be used to manufacture bamboo flooring which is harder than Oak! live Moso bamboo is dark green in color, and dries to a rich deep brown hue.
Tonkin Bamboo is a great decorative pole, fencing product and popular mainstay in tiki bars, Tonkin is one of the most versatile species of bamboo. It is also the most varied in terms of color: Tonkin can be harvested when it’s a bright, vibrant green, dark green, tan, or kiln-dried to a golden brown. Tonkin fencing is also stronger and much more durable than traditional pine or cedar. Vivax Bamboo is so green, it practically glows in the dark! Silver rings adorn each node on Vivax, making it a beautiful decorative pole for indoors or outdoors. If kiln-dried, Vivax loses some of its green vibrancy, but turns from a bright green into an dazzling array of colors ranging from purple to hunter green to brown.
Nigra, AKA Black Bamboo, is rare in the USA because it’s hard to grow in the States. Nigra has a silver coating of wax that can be saved if you so desired. But the real magic with Nigra is when you polish it. It then takes on a whole new look and resembles a rich, dark ebony tone that will bring your to your knees. Another high quality decorative bamboo pole is Robert Young. Robert Young is a bright yellow, this is Robert Young’s unique color. Rare poles include a small green stripe naturally running down the side, making this decorative pole a sought after species amongst designers and collectors.
